About the ExamThe American Association of Critical CareNurses (AACN) administers the PCCN exam.This test is designed for RNs who practice inTelemetry, Intermediate Care, DirectObservation, and Transitional Care Units.This class will provide all the materials andinformation required for the participants toregister for and complete the PCCNexamination.

Course DescriptionThis course is recommended for RNsdesiring to take the Progressive CareCertified Nurse (PCCN) examination offeredby the American Association of Critical CareNurses. The review covers a broad range ofnursing practice principles based on theSynergy Model. Test-Taking Strategies areemphasized throughout the course.

Featured SpeakerKaren Carroll RN CCNS PCCN CCRN haspracticed as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for the last 20 years in both critical andprogressive care units. Ms. Carroll’s graduate and undergraduate degrees are from SanDiego State University (SDSU). In addition to practicing as a CNS she teaches andprecepts graduate students for SDSU. Ms. Carroll’s clinical expertise is in painmanagement, hemodynamics, cardiac, pulmonary, and ECG analysis. She haspublished on a variety of topics including, pain in the critically ill and heart failure. Shefrequently presents locally and nationally on a variety of topics related to the care ofthe acute and critically ill. She has the ability to present advanced concepts in an easyto understand manner. Ms. Carroll is an enthusiastic educator who uses current clinicalexperiences to emphasize important course content.

Course Objectives

Participants will:

1. Demonstrate critical thinking skillsnecessary to successfully completethe PCCN exam.

2. Describe appropriate nursinginterventions for common clinicalproblems encountered in aprogressive care unit (PCU).

3. Analyze and answer practice testquestions related to all body systems.

4. Describe patient assessmentfindings and evaluate treatment goalsfor patients commonly cared for in aPCU.5. Utilize the synergy model inoptimizing patient outcomes.6. Practice test-taking strategies byusing the provided study guide.
